Gilbert Shelton’s Underground Comix and Art
Gilbert Shelton is a highly significant American cartoonist known for being a key figure in the underground comix movement of the 1960’s and 1970’s. His satirical, humorous, and countercultural comics, most notably The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, captured the spirit of the era and have had a lasting influence on subsequent generations of cartoonists and animators.
The audience here in Austin is very aware of Shelton’s work and, indeed, many were part of the generation who changed the culture not just here in Austin, but the state AND nation. The work is still relevant and this exhibit can make it accessible to the younger generation as well.
The exhibit will include:
Original posters and drawings by Gilbert Shelton
Comic book panels and photographs that capture the essence of the era to the current day.
Screens displaying rolling information and imagery to provide context and enhance the visitor experience.
8 special events with panel discussions, lectures and the opportunity for attendees to record oral history stories about their experiences in the past and
