Gilbert Shelton’s France 1998 poster was an unofficial design created for the 1998 FIFA World Cup that was playfully inscribed as being “submitted to the French Ministry but they didn’t approve.” I wonder why??
As creator of the Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers, and true to the anti-establishment, stoner-comic ethos of his work, the poster bears the tongue-in-cheek inscription noting it was submitted to official government channels—and predictably rejected by straight-laced authorities who weren't quite ready to embrace the Freak Brothers as ambassadors of French athletics.
However, as shown by the text at the bottom, a bohemian cozy tea room named “The Troc” in Paris (now closed), which was a quirky space that included comic books and vintage records, decided to support this clever take on the World Cup. Shelton moved to Paris in ‘84, and has had his home base and studio there ever since.
*For more context, there is plenty of more information online if you search the poster’s title and artist name.
This poster is a high-quality color reproduction, printed digital glossy on poster cardstock.
